Fine Russian war hammer mounted on later shaft, 16th century. Well carved and chiseled war hammer in iron and with square face and long down tapered rear terminating spike. Hammer square with pointed ends and carved in multiple layers of incised lines and levels, the central section affixed to the wood shaft with replaced rivets and incised in angled lines, rear spike is carved as well with grooved recesses to corners creating a multisided shape. The blade a double edge with wavy to straight laminated steel that terminates at a sharp point. Southeast Asia, Vietnam. The Red River Delta and neighboring regions. Collection of three shouldered adze of the late Neolithic period, and probably Mai Pha culture 3000-2500 BCE. The two examples - grey stone left and polished orange sandstone - at either side in a form characteristic of shouldered Adze typically found throughout Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Malaysia. One of the earliest and most recognizable forms. Center example a larger shouldered Adze in dark black stone probably volcanic rock or dark shale stone. Size of largest 5" L

Beautifully quality jambiya dagger in scabbard with heavily ornamented and complete belt, first half of the 20th century. The broad, deeply curved, double edged blade with thick mid-rib. One piece buffalo horn hilt decorated with inlaid nail head design, two iron rivets with round brass escutcheons in the form of ancient coins, narrow gilt silver ferrule tooled with Arabic inscriptions. The wooden scabbard entirely sheathed in finely worked silver with openwork and granulation on the lower portion and an elongated bulbous finial (repaired). The mouth portion covered with embroidered fabric retained with braided green leather strapwork, the reverse entirely covered in plain fabric. The wide, thick belt with gold thread embroidery in rows of geometric elements on the obverse, plain fabric on reverse, with five silver rosettes fitted with loose-rings applied along with three large silver fittings decorated in the same technique as the scabbard. A silversmith's stamp in Arabic on the reverse of one of the large silver fittings. Belt 39" L, dagger 12 1/4" L, blade 8 1/2" L. This dagger is a type called a Thouma and was worn by magistrates (Qadi) in Yemeni religious courts, and by the tribal nobility (Sayyidi) claiming descent from the prophet Mohammed. The workmanship of the scabbard, belt and its ornaments is consistent with that of Jewish craftsmen who monopolized the silver and blacksmiths trades in Sana'a, Yemen, prior to their emigrating to Israel en masse from the 1950s onward.

West Asia, Yemen. Fine and large Yemeni silver mounted dagger and embroidered belt. Slender, double edged blade of moderate curvature with stiff medial ridge, hand forged lamellar steel indicating some age and sharp edges. Blade on a horn hilt retained by three dome headed rivets and with silver ornamentation on the front face, decorated with geometric applique designs. The wood scabbard with matching silver throat and chape, the center portion covered with brown leather, attached to a belt with applique and stitched leather in simple geometric designs of white, red, and green. Size belt 35 1/2" L, dagger 20 1/2" L, blade 16" L.

Front long bladed dagger, some of which assume the dimensions of short sword, are characteristic of the northwestern Yemen and adjoining areas of Saudi Arabia and are called Saboki.

The text with various meanings and poetic saying from family and friends of the Imperial Army soldier. During WWII Imperial Japan began enlisting willing recruits bound by Honor to engage in suicide missions. The pilots and their planes were referred to as Divine Wind or Kamikaze, often referenced to the typhoon that prevented the Mongol forces of Kublai Khan from invading Japan in the 13th century. Spanish Colonial, Philippines, circa mid 1800s dagger. Very hefty and heavy flamberge wavy blade dagger with original leather scabbard. An important piece with thick diamond cross-section to the wavy blade. The blade has worn etching to either side with the forward sections having scrolling motifs in the Filipinas style. To the first section of the blade some legible letters and words appear including (San , … M…) and the date (18xx) now illegible to the remainder. The distinct star at either side an obviously Philippines original although with the meaning now lost. The handle in exceptional form with a layered mosaic of bone, pewter, copper, wood, and other mixed materials. The mosaic handle is another indication of the colonial influence from the early Spanish / Philippines period of the early to mid 1800s. The steel quillion in S-form with opposing directions. Straight Moro kris featuring a cockatoo hilt with original ratan hilt wrap in good condition. Single asang or blade clamp. Double-edge blade with visible signs of delamination. Cocatau hilt in fruit wood. The Moro people of the southern Philippines resisted Spanish colonialists who tried to eliminate their "heresy". The Moros allowed the Spanish to build forts in the Sultanate of Sulu in the last quarter of the century but Spanish control remained limited to military stations, garrisons and civilian settlements. Pre-Columbian, Chavin culture 900-200 BCE. Ceremonial abstract mace head carved from brown stone with a series of heavily spiraled edges. Each deeply carved with 7 disc like flanges around a central tube that would have been mounted to a staff. Chavin flourished in the Andean region of Peru from around 900 BCE to 200 BCE, during the Early Horizon period of Andean prehistory. Size 4 7/8" H, 4" W

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Atlantic Watershed, 500-900 CE. Double Spiked head form mace in nearly translucent Alabaster stone. The head carving features two prominent spikes protruding from either side with a humanoid skull that is carved with a prominent brow that connects at the top of the nose.

Heavy all brass furniture. Stock is solid with incised decorations. The convex banana shaped lock is unmarked. Wood ram rod with a flat brass tip. This pistol may have seen action in the French & Indian War - American Revolutionary War and is in Very good size flintlock. Size overall 20 1/4" L

Good working order. Stock has wood restoration on the left side of the barrel tang and scratches/dings from years of handling and use. All steel parts have salt & pepper light pitting

Fine target rifle with beautifully carved stock and octagonal barrel, the ramrod is original and the rifle has roughly a .25" bore. This target rifle was reputedly owned Christian Castenskiold a member of the royal family of Denmark and kin to the King of Denmark. Christian born 1926 into the royal family a cousin of Queen Margrethe. His mother Royal Highness Princess Dagmar Castenskiold and his father Jorgen Castenskiold titled Master of the Royal Hunt. 1949 Christian became the only member of the Royal family to do so immigrated to the US. Shortly after Christian was married and then drafted to the United States Army where he served just before the Korean war, previous he served in the Royal Danish Guard as an Officer. Barrel 21" L, overall 36" L

Fine wood stock heavily inlaid to all the surface with a series of geometric patterned dyed bone panels affixed with copper pins. Barrel proof marked (32) over illegible regimental text done with stippling. Early label to underside. Size 64" L, barrel 45 1/2" L

French cavalier helm hammered from two sheets of riveted steel with a central nasal guard. Modeled after the 16th and 17th century wide-brimmed style hat of like form. Cavalier hats were often felt and usually with a cocked up side or pinned brim. Cavaliers who supported English King Charles I during the Civil War were known for their extravagant dress. The wide brim is blade and upturned to one side with a rolled edge. The skull is hammered from a single sheet of iron with a concave top. Mexico, Veracruz, 450 - 1000CE. Rare Palma form avian bird with a mane of feathers and sharp beak. The face has a unique appearance when shadowed in natural light. Carved in a dark grey basalt volcanic rock with a gentile arch to the lower section. Palmas are so named due to their similarity to palm fonds. The great leaf like carvings were believed to be used by Mesoamerican ballplayers and rested on top of the Yugo. Their purpose was to protect players from damage to vital organs and the impact from the rubber ball. Size 8 1/2" H x 5 1/2" W x 4 1/2" L

Mexico, Veracruz 450 - 1000CE Tall Pre-Columbian ballgame palma mounted on custom stand carved from natural grey basalt volcanic rock. The back with a slightly curved shape leading up to a wide circular form, the face with a carved recess, and the base with a gentile arch.

So named because of their similarity to palm fronds the Pre-Columbian palma was a Veracruz tool used to protect the Mesoamerican ballgame players vital organs from damage caused by the rubber ball. Palmas which are believed to be specific to Veracruz would be worn slightly away from the chest at their upper most section and affixed at the waist.

For examples of Palma in use see renditions of El Tajin ballcourt temple with the depiction of a sacrificed ballplayer wearing a Palma. 16" H x 7 1/4" W x 5 1/4" L

Caribbean Islands, Hispaniola, Taino 'Bird Man' anthropomorphic form celt 900 - 1500 BCE, Carved from a yellowed patina limestone in the form of a bird man with engraved arms brought in to represent wings. Long pointed beak with traditional engraved linear details. The skull in a flat bird form with big recessed eyes representing a hollowed skull like image. The Bird Man, or "Zemi", was a significant spiritual figure in Taino culture. Zemis were sacred objects or spirits, often represented in the form of carved wooden or stone figures. The Bird Man was one of the many forms that zemis could take. The bird was representative of the spiritual realm and was often associated with the sun, sky and the afterlife. Size 5 1/2" H, 2 3/4 W

Maya jade dream masks were likely used in rituals associated with death and the afterlife. They were believed to facilitate the transition of the deceased to the realm of the ancestors or the underworld. The masks may have been placed over the face or near to protect and guide them on their journey.

Pre-Columbian, Hispaniola, Caribbean Islands 15th century-style old Taino 'Brain Coral' carved and highly stylized elongated skull in the form known as 'Anunnaki', deities of ancient Mesopotamia. Also among other civilizations such as the Alchon kings of central Asia and ultimately the Taino of the Caribbean Islands. Taino would shape and deformed skulls to mimic this stylized form and this unusual practice started at birth. A system of tablets would be used with cotton and during development the skull and brain could be deformed to create the desired effect. From an Old Puerto Rico Private Collection. ex-collection of Stanley L. Kaufman, a Harvard educated lawyer who specialized in bringing suits on behalf of corporations' disgruntled stockholders, died in 1993 at the age of 81. He was a staff attorney with the Securities and Exchange Commission before World War II, then served in the Army in Europe and rose to captain. In 1946 he became a founding partner in his law firm, Kaufman Malchman, Kaufmann & Kirby, which had branches in NYC and Los Angeles. Stanley and his wife Sigrun Rampoldt were avid collectors of Pre-Columbian art.

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Potosi Applique 600 - 900 CE. Crocodile effigy incense burner or incensario of large form constructed in two parts with a large conical basin base and similarly shaped lid with a pierced zoomorphic handle on top depicting a highly stylized beast like a crocodile or lizard. The rims of both the base and top are heavily decorated with triangular applique or scale like decoration.

Potosí Applique is a type of two-part ceramic object that was manufactured in the Greater Nicoya region from approximately AD 100-1250. The objects consist of a dish-form base and a tall, generally bell-shaped lid. The applique pellet design varies across the Potosí type, with shapes ranging from spikes, to rounded " lumps ", to raised circular " O " shapes. Potosí Applique was manufactured and used in both the northern (Nicaragua) and southern (Costa Rica) sectors of Greater Nicoya. Size 13 1/2" H x 10 1/2" W

Central America, Costa Rica 150-700 CE, rare pre-Columbian openwork jade plaque of a pictorial image of an animal with split tail and back turned head. The stone is carved a variegated medium jade and rectangular form with notching's and incusing to border with an openwork animal to the center.

Costa Rica from 100-700 CE was one of the earliest centers of fine worked jade and numerous examples have surfaced in the form of ax, celts, pendants, and more. Including temples to the rim, with polychrome banding, leading to painted emblems on each side, with a sunrise style emblem to the reverse. Size 8 1/2" W x 4 1/2" H

Minor wear, root marks, and loss to pigment throughout.

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Colima circa 100 BC - 250 AD. Lovely miniature kneeling woman depicting with a large bowl on her head. Red slip over clay, she kneels with her arms outstretched at her sides, mouth agape and almost eyes. Size 2 1/2" H x 2" W

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Tlatilco culture. Tlatilco hand built pottery head,with cinnabar pigment remaining throughout. Ear adorned with large ear spools, ovoid impressed eyes, frowning thin lips, and petite triangular nose. Fragment size 3 7/8" H on included custom stand.

Early pre-Columbian 200 BC - 100 AD tan slipped puppy dog. Standing with a playful expression, the dog features perky pierced ears, rounded and beveled eyes, with tongue sticking out with a smiling face. The piece has wonderful mineral deposits throughout with wide spout acting as the dogs tail. Size 10" H x 7 1/2" W x 6" H

Professional restoration to back left leg and small chip on rim of spout, else intact and well preserved.

Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Mesoamerica Olmec 1200-900 BCE, reddish cream colored bowl with a low relief figural head to the face. Exceptional details of a transformative figure, ears in long rectangular form with incised recess imitating the form of a human ear. Pointed almond eyes of exceptional form highlighted in a faint red pigment matching to the sides of the face which feature crosshatch incising probably mimicking hair or tattooing. The brow and expression of the cleft head and mouth, the downturned open mouth with a cross hatch goatee to the chin in an unusual depiction, parts of the face are highlighted in red pigment including the eyes, hair or tattooing, and chin with the remaining in a lighter or white pigment. 7" W x 4 1/2" H

Olmec culture base in southern Mexico 1600-900 BCE and Later La Venta 900-400 BCE were some of the earliest Mesoamerica civilizations. Their worship and obsession with jaguar is present in numerous elements of their art although exceptional examples with more vivid detailing and iconography more easily rendered in terracotta over the prized but difficult to work hardstones. After 400BCE the Olmec civilization population saw a steep decline and had few inhabitants until the 19th century.

Numerous locations of manganese, extensive repair to the sides and base in unrestored original condition with losses as seen.

Circa 100 BC to 200 AD, West Coast, Mexico. Handsome polychrome seated figure, depicted sitting beneath a mushroom cap (top since lost) with a dog laying out in front of him. Polychrome striped shirt and painting throughout, strong scattered mineral deposits throughout. Size 4 3/4" H x 2 3/4" W

Some surface wear and scratches throughout, no obvious signs of restoration.

West Mexico, Protoclassic circa 100 BC - 250 AD. Rare figure of a gopher standing on four short legs, with mouth agape, almond shaped eyes, and short snout. Red-brown pottery with top spout, mineral deposits throughout as well as strong root marks. Size 8 1/4" L x 4 1/2" H

Small chip to mouth, minor losses to the surface commensurate with age.

West Coast, Mexico, Ecuador, circa 300 BC/AD. Fine group of three ceramic effigies. Tri-pod bird small pot, with incised circular details all over the body, orange exterior with red inside. Plump dog or animal with wide open spout, squat jar. Lastly, a lamp or candle ceramic snuffer with exterior points throughout, and a handle to hang from a hook. Largest 4" L x 3" H

Fine overall condition throughout.

Ecuador, circa 500 AD, Jamacoaque polychrome figure in a relaxed, reclining position. Arms propped up behind him, the figure appears to be gazing upwards possibly at the night sky, or to the trees above. He wears terracotta red shirt and orange pants. Green necklace and a lovely headdress with green lappets. Incised facial features with a contemplative expression, almond slit eyes and full lips. Size 5 3/4" L

Restoration to both remaining lappets, possible restoration to left arm. Otherwise impressively preserved with remaining pigments.

Pre-Columbian Remojadas woman in ceremonial dress with strong rattle in light brown ceramic and white pigment, figures often are depicted with raised arms, smiling Sonriente faces, and elaborate ceremonial dress of crowns and clothing in intricate geometric patterns and style. Size 6" H x 4" W

As-is condition with loss to foot, both arms are lost, pigment and soiling.

Standing female figure with triangular headdress and offering vessel. The figure features wide earrings and wears a dress, and long hair. The Pre-Classic period saw many well known cultures arise in and around Mexico with so called Chupicuaro figures as a central component. The primary site of these early figures is now underwater after an artificial lake was created by the Solid Dam. For similar examples from this region and other see the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History. Size 4" H x 1 3/4" W
