A leading figure in the 19th-century literary movement known as the Fireside Poets, he wrote works like Old Ironsides and The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table. From Charles E. La Motte to "Henry", possibly Brevet Brig Gen Henry M. Cist. Strongly worded, the letter refers to George Ward Nichols and La Motte's blunt opinion of his unfit character. The letter was aimed at keeping Nichols out of MOLLUS - Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, established after Lincoln's assassination, as an organization of Civil War veterans. Nichols wrote an article that exaggerated Wild Bill Hickok's exploits. Letter was most likely written between 1867 - 1885.Lined paper, folded in half, approx. 15-1/2" x 9-3/4" laid open. Excellent condition with some creases and the center fold, overall toning of the paper, some bleed through of the ink, and pencil notations at the top. See images.
