Unique and rare find! A practically complete collection of the butterflies of Monroe County and vicinity, collected and mounted by Merrill Eaton during the summer of 1934. Includes descriptions of the framed collection noting 128 specimens of 67 species and variations, plus numerous loose specimens. Largest frames 8" x 6" with a few variations, framed mainly with cotton batting against glass, some with labels. As-found collection includes:
4 framed provenance descriptions and 4 memo books with butterfly and moth notes plus additional household accounting.
12 frames with a single specimen, 28 frames with two specimens, many front and side views of the same species, and 44 frames with three or more specimens. Labels include The Painted Lady, Silver Spotted Skipper, Clover Hunters, Tiger, Monarch, Nymphalinae, Cloudless Sulpher, Tiger Swallowtail, Windowed Moth, Robin Moth.
Also includes a large assortment of unexamined loose / un-mounted specimens - conditions unknown, but some appear to be powdery.
Stored for 75+ years, with various flaking and staining to mounts noted, this amazing, non-inventoried collection is ready for restoration and admiration. There are sure to be rarities in this group!
