Pozzatti attended summer sessions at the University of Colorado where he studied under Max Beckmann in 1949 and Ben Shahn in 1950. He received his BFA in 1948 and his MFA in 1950. Upon graduation, he was appointed to the position of instructor in the art department of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. In 1956, Pozzatti assumed an assistant professorship in drawing and graphic arts at Indiana University at Bloomington. While there, he developed one of the leading printmaking departments in the United States. In 1979, he co-founded Echo Press with fellow printmaker David Keister. Pozzatti was an energetic and prolific artist and teacher who has produced a vast body of work, traveled the world, held numerous artist-in-residencies and visiting artist positions, mounted many solo exhibitions, and whose work was included in copious numbers of group exhibitions. During that period, he put his etchings on consignment in various galleries, but his responsibilities prevented him from indulging in his art as anything more than a hobby. With the closing of the shoe factory, Mersky decided to make his art a full-time endeavor. His long years of business experience provided an important base as he started selling his prints. His clients soon included Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, with whom he had a 10-year contract. He created more than 20 original copper plates for Colonial Williamsburg. Among other buyers were Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, Plymouth Plantation and Sturbridge in Massachusetts. Besides private collections, Leonard Mersky's work is found in the fine-print collection of Georgetown University. Richard Burkett has made pottery for over 50 years, starting in 1970 with a summer job throwing ashtrays on the potter's wheel for the late Indiana potter Richard Peeler. Burkett established his own Wild Rose Pottery in 1973 on a farm near Bainbridge Indiana, where he made salt glazed pottery for ten years. Returning to school in 1983, Richard completed a dual MFA in ceramics and photography at Indiana University Bloomington in 1986. He has taught ceramics since that time, first at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and since 1989 at San Diego State University. Richard's work continues to include a range of ceramics objects, from functional stoneware and porcelain to clay and mixed-media sculpture, although since retiring from teaching at SDSU he has focused again on primarily being a studio potter. He has given workshops and lectures in Wales, Turkey, Ireland, Korea, Ecuador, Canada, Sweden, Finland, at universities across the U.S, and at Penland and Arrowmont craft schools. As a teenager, he began studying with important Hoosier Group impressionist painters, William Forsyth and Otto Stark. He worked at a foundry at night to put himself through Herron Art Institute. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1927, and at the 2nd Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Negro Art in San Diego in 1928, and the catalog read: "In spite of acute poverty, this young man has the faculty of discerning beauty in everything, being able to face all his adversities with a smile that conceals the feeling within, at the same time he possesses a personality which strangely draws people to him." He also exhibited at the Hoosier Salon in 1929, 1931,and 1934, which were then held in Chicago at Marshall Field and Company. He won first prize for a portrait at the Indiana State Fair in 1934. He participated in the American Negro Exposition in Chicago, 1940. Hardrick's landscapes are derived from the many trips he took to Brown County Indiana. He traveled to the area at the peak of the autumn season, when the leaves were at the height of their color; during the summer when the sun was bright and hot; and in the winter when the ground was covered with snow. He did not sketch or paint during these visits. Instead, the artist took in the different scenes and committed them to memory. He applied his paint very thickly, using a palette knife to create a tactile surface. He relied on a brush only to blend or add a shape and used his thumb to mold the paint as if he were shaping a sculpture. His landscapes were romanticized versions of his memories of his visits to the country. He blended his own paint when possible and has a very distinctive palette. Otto Stark was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1859. Apprenticed to a lithographer, Stark studied at the University of Cincinnati School of Design before moving to New York to work as an illustrator. Further study followed in Paris at the Academie Julian. Stark met with success in Paris, exhibiting twice at the prestigious Salon. Returning to the U.S. with his French wife and daughter, the Starks settled in first in New York and later Philadelphia, where Otto painted and sold illustrations. When his wife died following the birth of their fourth child, Stark returned to Indiana, where he exhibited with T.C. Steele, Richard Gruelle, and William Forsyth during the 1890's. Stark initially established an art studio in Indianapolis in 1893 to teach art classes but continued to paint while working as an art instructor. He worked in oil, watercolor, and pastel, and drew on his everyday life experiences as a parent of small children. Stark frequently included young children in his paintings. After his retirement from teaching in 1919, Stark painted on a full-time basis until his death in 1926. Stark was one of the artists included in the Five Hoosier Painters exhibition that the Central Art Association sponsored in Chicago, Illinois, in December 1894. The exhibition comprised more than sixty paintings by Stark, William Forsyth, T. C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams, and Richard Gruelle, dubbed as the Hoosier Group in reference to the exhibition. In addition to his numerous paintings, Stark created murals for Indianapolis Public Schools, School Number 60 in 1913 with Indiana artist Carl G. Graf, and in1914, along with Forsyth, Steele, and eleven other artists, he painted murals for Indianapolis City Hospital. His teachers included William Forsyth, Clifton Wheeler, Oakley Richey, Al Hibbard, Paul Hadley, Eliot O'Hara, and Emile Gruppe. He exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC.; New Kirk Gallery, St. Ives, England 1952; the Hoosier Salon where he won prizes in 1949, 56-58, 76; the Richmond Artists Association 1957, 65, 66, 71, 82; Indiana State Fair 1934, 39; and Anderson Art Society, 1936. He was a pastor of Society of Friends (Quakers) for twenty-five years. Otto Stark was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1859. Apprenticed to a lithographer, Stark studied at the University of Cincinnati School of Design before moving to New York to work as an illustrator. Further study followed in Paris at the Academie Julian. Stark met with success in Paris, exhibiting twice at the prestigious Salon. Returning to the U.S. with his French wife and daughter, the Starks settled in first in New York and later Philadelphia, where Otto painted and sold illustrations. When his wife died following the birth of their fourth child, Stark returned to Indiana, where he exhibited with T.C. Steele, Richard Gruelle, and William Forsyth during the 1890's. Stark initially established an art studio in Indianapolis in 1893 to teach art classes but continued to paint while working as an art instructor. He worked in oil, watercolor, and pastel, and drew on his everyday life experiences as a parent of small children. Stark frequently included young children in his paintings. After his retirement from teaching in 1919, Stark painted on a full-time basis until his death in 1926. Stark was one of the artists included in the Five Hoosier Painters exhibition that the Central Art Association sponsored in Chicago, Illinois, in December 1894. The exhibition comprised more than sixty paintings by Stark, William Forsyth, T. C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams, and Richard Gruelle, dubbed as the Hoosier Group in reference to the exhibition. In addition to his numerous paintings, Stark created murals for Indianapolis Public Schools, School Number 60 in 1913 with Indiana artist Carl G. Graf, and in1914, along with Forsyth, Steele, and eleven other artists, he painted murals for Indianapolis City Hospital. Stark took annual painting trips to Leland, Michigan, where he was a guest of the J. Ottis Adams family at their summer home. Stark also painted at "The Hermitage," the Adams' home in Brookville, Indiana, and was a frequent visitor to T. C. Steele's home, "The House of the Singing Winds," in Brown County, Indiana. In addition, Stark painted for two summers at Indiana's Lake Maxinkuckee and took a three-month painting trip with Adams to New Smyrna Beach, Florida, in 1920-21. She has worked on several textbooks and spent ten years illustrating amphipods for the National Museum of Natural Sciences of Canada. After 10 years in British Columbia Floy and her husband, Dave, returned to California in 1983, where Floy became active in the art community of the Bay Area. She taught watercolor techniques for over twenty years and her paintings have won numerous awards in national shows. Floy is represented by several galleries in the San Francisco Bay Area. Painter and printmaker Rudolph Otto "Rudy" Pozzatti was born in Telluride, Colorado in 1925. Upon graduation from high school, he received a scholarship to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder where he enrolled as an art major. In 1943, his studies were interrupted by his induction into the U. S. Army. After his discharge in 1946, he re-enrolled in the University of Colorado where he studied under Wendell Black, who established the printmaking workshop. Pozzatti attended summer sessions at the University of Colorado where he studied under Max Beckmann in 1949 and Ben Shahn in 1950. He received his BFA in 1948 and his MFA in 1950. Upon graduation, he was appointed to the position of instructor in the art department of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. In 1956, Pozzatti assumed an assistant professorship in drawing and graphic arts at Indiana University at Bloomington. While there, he developed one of the leading printmaking departments in the United States. In 1979, he co-founded Echo Press with fellow printmaker David Keister. Pozzatti was an energetic and prolific artist and teacher who has produced a vast body of work, traveled the world, held numerous artist-in-residencies and visiting artist positions, mounted many solo exhibitions, and whose work was included in copious numbers of group exhibitions. His work is represented in many important US and international museums and collections. She taught art at Mount Mercy Academy in Grand Rapids, and at Mercy High School in Detroit for 30 years, encouraging and supporting the artistic talents of her students and serving as chair of the art department. Under the auspices of the Foreign Study League for High School Students, Sister Mary Ignatius spent the summers of 1968 and 1970 guiding students through museums in Rome, Florence, Paris, Geneva, London and Madrid. In 1978, Scholastic Magazines honored her as the only art teacher whose students had won Blue Ribbon and Hallmark awards for 35 consecutive years. That same summer she was named Farmington Hills "Artist of the Year." Sister Mary Ignatius established an adult art education program at Mercy Center in Farmington Hills in 1979. When this concluded eight years later, she continued at Mercy Center as an artist in residence. She taught art at Mount Mercy Academy in Grand Rapids, and at Mercy High School in Detroit for 30 years, encouraging and supporting the artistic talents of her students and serving as chair of the art department. Under the auspices of the Foreign Study League for High School Students, Sister Mary Ignatius spent the summers of 1968 and 1970 guiding students through museums in Rome, Florence, Paris, Geneva, London and Madrid. In 1978, Scholastic Magazines honored her as the only art teacher whose students had won Blue Ribbon and Hallmark awards for 35 consecutive years. That same summer she was named Farmington Hills "Artist of the Year." Sister Mary Ignatius established an adult art education program at Mercy Center in Farmington Hills in 1979. Painter and printmaker Rudolph Otto "Rudy" Pozzatti was born in Telluride, Colorado, on January 14, 1925. Upon graduation from high school, he received a scholarship to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder where he enrolled as an art major. In 1943, his studies were interrupted by his induction into the U. S. Army. After his discharge in 1946, he re-enrolled in the University of Colorado where he studied under Wendell Black, who established the printmaking workshop. Pozzatti attended summer sessions at the University of Colorado where he studied under Max Beckmann in 1949 and Ben Shahn in 1950. He received his BFA in 1948 and his MFA in 1950. Upon graduation, he was appointed to the position of instructor in the art department of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. In 1956, Pozzatti assumed an assistant professorship in drawing and graphic arts at Indiana University at Bloomington. While there, he developed one of the leading printmaking departments in the United States. In 1979, he co-founded Echo Press with fellow printmaker David Keister. Among the grants and honors awarded him was a Fulbright grant he received in 1952, which he used to travel to Italy; a Graduate School fellowship from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1957, which he used to travel in Mexico; and in 1963 he received a Ford Foundation grant which enabled him to spend three months working at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles, and a Guggenheim Foundation grant and a Fulbright travel grant to study in Italy for the summer. In 1981, Pozzatti was elected a member of the National Academy of Design, and in 1989, he received the Professor Emeritus Award by the Southeastern Graphic Association. Pozzatti was an energetic and prolific artist and teacher who has produced a vast body of work, traveled the world, held numerous artist-in-residencies and visiting artist positions, mounted numerous solo exhibitions, and whose work was included in copious numbers of group exhibitions. We encourage you to inspect items in person during preview or by appointment before bidding. Oversized and/or framed art pieces require additional shipping and handling fees, often at substantial cost for larger pieces; Shipping may be possible by white glove service. Items requiring crating or shipment by freight are the sole responsibility of the winning bidder to arrange and communicate to EDS.
