William J. Koelpin was a celebrated wildlife artist and master woodcarver whose passion for nature inspired lifelike sculptures, paintings, and bronzes. Raised near Milwaukee, Koelpin honed his artistic skills through field studies and personal dedication, creating a legacy that elevated American sporting art. He gained national recognition as a "Best in World" winner at the Art and Waterfowl Exhibit in Salisbury, Maryland, and earned accolades such as "Master of the Guild" from the International Wood Carvers Guild.
Koelpins work, noted for its precise realism and emotional depth, often depicted hunting, fishing, and nautical themes. His ability to capture the spirit of wildlife earned him features in prestigious venues like the Leigh-Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and recognition from Ducks Unlimited as Wisconsin?s Artist of the Year. Museums and collectors worldwide treasure his works for their exquisite detail and enduring artistry.
While Koelpin is perhaps best known for his celebrated bronze sculptures, his competition decoys stand as rare and remarkable examples of his artistry. Hollow-carved and retaining their original competition keels and aged labels, these decoys are a rare and noteworthy find, with none like them appearing at public auction in over 25 years.
The duo is distinctly unique: the hen, posed in a subtle swimming posture, contrasts beautifully with the more restful drake. Both feature carved bills, crests, and sculpted wing details, including finely carved feather tips. The drake is further distinguished by delicate comb painting along its sides, adding texture and lifelike depth. Finished in stunning, soft matte paint, the pair exudes a natural realism that elevates their presence. Glass eyes bring a lifelike quality to the carvings, completing these beautifully rendered works.
Koelpins lifelong love of the outdoors and craftsmanship transcended mediums, blending nostalgic charm with technical mastery. Today, his legacy continues to inspire and preserve the beauty of the natural world.
