These original artist renderings are from the 1930's and early 1940's and were the proof designs for the unit's themselves. They are all on heavy card stock measuring 11 X 14 inches and complete original period proofs of the units to include 1) 1930 VJ-7M and later MAG-21The 2nd Aviation Group was formed at Naval Air Station San Diego in August 1922. They were redesignated Aircraft Squadrons, West Coast Expeditionary Force in July 1926. 8 January 1934 saw another name change, this time to Aircraft Two, Fleet Marine Force. On 1 May 1939, they were redesignated again to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Group. The group was sent overseas to Marine Corps Air Station Ewa, Hawaii in January 1941. There they consolidated with the headquarters of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing 10 July 1941, and less than a month later they were redesignated Marine Aircraft Group 21. World War II: MAG-21 (6 December 1941) Components: VMF-211, VMF-221, VMO-251, VMSB-231, VMSB-132, VMJ-252. During the 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor MAG-21 suffered 17 casualties and all 21 of its aircraft were destroyed.[5] Squadrons from MAG-21 fought at the Battle of Wake Island, Battle of Midway and as part of the Cactus Air Force during the Battle of Guadalcanal but the group itself remained at MCAS Ewa until February 1943 when they departed for Banika in the Russell Islands. By June 1943, MAG-21's squadrons were fighting large scale operations against Japanese installations in the northern Solomon Islands. The group moved to Efate in November 1943 and remained there until June 1944. Their final destination during the war was on Guam where it was based from August 1944 until the end of the war. The squadron returned to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in March 1946 with follow on movement to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina.[3] The group was decommissioned in June 1947. 2) VF-2 UNIT INSIGNIA. VF-2 was established on 1 June 1943, at Naval Air Station Atlantic City. VF-2, known now as the "Rippers," became the first World War II fighting squadron to bear the same designation as a previous unit in the war. Several pilots came from VF-6 and VF-10. The squadron initially deployed 8 FM-1 Wildcats but soon received the Grumman F6F Hellcat. VF-2 trained on the east-coast until October 1943 when the squadron headed west to San Francisco and then Hawaii. In Hawaii, VF-2 participated in a Marine landing exercise and so impressed the influential "Butch" O'Hare that he requested that VF-2 replace VF-6 in his Air Group aboard USS Enterprise. From November 1943 to January 1944, VF-2 saw action during the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign. VF-2 participated in O'Hare-designed "bat teams" of 1 Grumman TBF Avenger and 2 Hellcats for night interceptions. In March 1944, VF-2 deployed aboard USS Hornet. From the Hornet, VF-2 participated in strikes against the Marianas on the afternoon of 11 June 1944. Over 200 F6Fs were launched from American carriers 200 miles (320 km) from their targets of Guam and Rota. VF-2 claimed 23 victories during the attack over the Guam airfield, while squadron aircraft closer to Hornet destroyed 3 Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" medium bombers. A second strike on Guam claimed another 10 Japanese aircraft. VF-2 scored 37 victories and only lost 1 plane. The next day, VF-2 attacked the Bonin Islands and Iwo Jima, only pilots which had not previously scored aerial kills were sent on this mission, claiming 17 kills. Between 19 and 20 June 1944, VF-2 was credited with 47 victories with only 1 airplane damaged beyond repair. On the afternoon of 20 June, Japanese carriers were located approximately 200 miles (320 km) to the west. A strike was ordered with bombs and torpedoes. After the strike, only 6 VF-2 aircraft returned to Hornet, the remaining having landed on other carriers. 5 aircraft were lost at sea. 5 days later, VF-2 claimed 67 kills in 1 day during a sweep of Iwo Jima, losing only 1 F6F Hellcat (an additional one was damaged beyond repair). During the 1943-44 period, VF-2 had conducted 184 strikes and 2050 sorties, destroying 50,000 tons of ships and 216 airborne airplanes and 245 airplanes on the ground. Losses totaled 3 airplanes in aerial combat and 4 to anti-aircraft fire. The lead article in the 23 October 1944 edition of Life magazine highlighted VF-2 in a seven-page spread, featuring pictures of 27 of the unit's Aces including Roy "Butch" Voris, later to become Blue Angel 1 in the original Blue Angels flight demonstration team, Arthur Van Haren, Jr. and Connie Hargreaves and Wilbur "Spider" Webb who each became an Ace in a Day.3) VB-101 UNIT INSIGNIA. Background Patrol Squadron 51 (VP-51) was established in the United States Navy (USN) from VP-54 and VP-12 at NAS Miramar. Wartime History: Assigned twelve PB4Y-1 Liberators (USN version of the B-24D Liberator) that retained their U.S. Army pain scheme but were assigned squadron numbers 51-P-? with the last digit was 1 to 12 for the first dozen plane numbers). Flying to the combat zone, VP-51 departed Barber's Point Airfield on Oahu then ferried their bombers across the Pacific to the South Pacific (SoPAC). On February 1, 1943 redesignated Bombing Squadron 101 (VB-101). On February 13, 1943 nine PB4Y-1 Liberators took off from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal on a bombing mission against Japanese shipping in the Buin-Shortland area. This was the squadron's first combat mission in the South Pacific (SoPAC). On February 14, 1943 nine PB4Y-1 Liberators each armed with a single 1,000 pound bomb took off from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal on a mission to bomb shipping in the Buin-Shortland area. The bombers were escorted by ten P-38 Lightnings from the 347th Fighter Group, 339th Fighter Squadron plus twelve F4U Corsairs from VMF-124 took off from Fighter 2 (Kukum). Around 11:45am the PB4Y-1 Liberators released their bombs over shipping off southern Bougainville. They claim "several direct hits were made on an AK which was seen to blow up. There was also a near miss on a DD." In fact, their bombs result in two near misses that bracket Kisaragi Maru. Also, two near misses bracketed Hitachi Maru causing hull damage and killing four, the damaged vessel was beached near Lamuai on southern Bougainville. After the bomb run, the Japanese fighters pressed their attacks against the bombers and fighters. Lost is PB4Y-1 Liberator 31950 pilot Lt. Jay D. Bacon, Jr. (MIA), PB4Y-1 Liberator 31970 pilot Lt. Stuart T. Cooper (MIA). On March 5, 1943 nine PB4Y-1 Liberators took off from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal on a mission to bomb Japanese shipping off southern Bougainville. Over the target, no Japanese ships were observed but several searchlights were observed from Buin to Kahili area and and light anti-aircraft fire. Lost returning is PB4Y-1 Liberator 31948 pilot Lt. Frank M. Fisler (MIA). On July 17, 1943 at 1:28am six PB4Y-1s (three from VB-101 and three from VB-102) took off from Carney Field on Guadalcanal on a night mission for a predawn bombing mission against Kahili Airfield (Buin) on southern Bougainville. Inbound, one aborts. After bombing, the VB-102 bombers intercepted a J1N1 Irving night fighter. Lost is PB4Y-1 Liberator 31952 pilot Lt(jg) John B. Haskett (MIA) temporarily assigned to VB-102. On October 1, 1944 redesigned Patrol Bombing Squadron 101 (VPB-101). On October 23, 1944 lost is PB4Y-1 32277 pilot Lt. Harold H. Lewis Jr. (MIA) on a patrol mission over "sector one" , possibly intercepted by enemy fighters. 4) USS HOUSTON (CA-30) AVIATION UNIT INSIGNIA. USS Houston (CA-30), a Northampton-class light cruiser, was commissioned in June 1930. Originally designated (CL-30), she was reclassified as (CA-30) the following year. Becoming the flagship of the Asiatic Fleet in 1931, she served until November 1933 to depart and to protect U.S. interests in Chinese waters during the conflict between China and Japan. Joining the Scouting Force after her Asiatic Station tour, Houston joined the Scouting Force carrying President Franklin D. Roosevelt on numerous trips and became the flagship of the United States Fleet during September-December 1938. Returning to the Asiatic Fleet in November 1940, she was ordered to Australian and Netherlands East Indies waters following the United States' entry into war in December 1941. Despite an enemy bomb disabling her after-gun turret on February 4, 1942, Houston remained in the area and took part in the Battle of Java Sea on February 27. Ordered from the area the following day, and while steaming with the Australian light-cruiser Perth, she encountered the strong Japanese force supporting an amphibious landing on western Java, resulting in the Battle of Sunda Strait. Valiantly fighting against the enemy, both Houston and Perth were sunk by enemy gunfire and torpedoes. All are excellent.

BIDDING RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES The auctioneer will determine the highest bidder. The auctioneer alone has the right to reopen the bidding of an item if deemed necessary due to a dispute. If there is a tie bid between the floor and Internet or absentee bid, the floor bid takes precedence. Title to all merchandise shall pass to the highest bidder at the fall of the auctioneer's hammer. Customers who have an established successful buying history with Milestone Auctions may be exempt from this. We will accept a personal or company check >$2,000 and/or from a first time buyer if you provide a Bank Letter of Credit, available on our website, www.milestoneauctions.com.
In the few situations where a successful bidder does not remit payment when due, Milestone Auctions will proceed with the legal steps necessary to protect its interests and will block the bidder from future auction participation.

Shipping / Pick Up
PACKING/SHIPPING
• It is the bidder’s responsibility to take shipping and handling costs into consideration when bidding on items.
• Packaging, shipping, and insurance on items will be available to successful bidders. Applicable charges will be applied.
• BIDDERS PRESENT AND TAKING ITEMS AFTER AUCTION – Items paid for must be packed, transported and/or removed by the purchaser at his/her own risk after the close of the sale. If any employee or agent of Milestone Auction shall pack or transport the merchandise, it is fully at the risk and responsibility and expense of the purchaser. Milestone Auctions shall not be held liable for any loss or damage that may be caused by the said agent or employee. All items not removed after the close of the sale may be shipped to the buyer at their expense or may be moved or stored by Milestone Auctions. Fees, rates, and insurance will be charged accordingly to the buyer.
• BIDDERS NOT PRESENT OR NEEDING SHIPPING - Shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice and are NON-REFUNDABLE. Shipping will be based on actual costs via FedEx, FedEx Freight or USPS (best way). Handling and insurance will vary in cost depending on each invoice. All packages will be shipped with insurance. Items will ship seven to fourteen (7-14) business days after payment is received.
• INTERNATIONAL SHIPMENTS – Milestone Auctions has the availability to ship to international bidders. By law, Milestone Auctions cannot and will not declare lesser values for any international purchases and all shipments will include the invoice with purchase totals including the buyer’s premium and shipping cost. All international bidders are responsible for paying all customs and duties on the items.
• LARGE SIZE ITEMS - Please inquire about shipping costs due to the size restrictions of freight shipments. A third party shipment may be necessary for larger items. Call for more information, 440-527-8060
