From Vandermaelen's Atlas Universel, the first lithographed world atlas, this map depicts Idaho and western parts of Wyoming & Montana--including Yellowstone and Tetons. One of the earliest detailed maps to show the tracks of Lewis & Clark in substantial detail, including dates. Colter's route in 1807 is also shown. Indian populations for different tribes are included. While the map includes a fair amount of myth and conjecture, it must be viewed as the first modern map of Idaho and western Montana. Coronelli, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718). America Settentrionale colle nuove scoperte fin all'Ann1688. Venice, c. 1690. Engraved two-sheet map by the foremost Italian mapmaker of the 17th century. Unjoined, framed and matted. A major leap in the cartography of the day, one of the first maps to emphasize the importance of the Mississippi and to give an accurate rendering of the Great Lakes. Arrowsmith, Aaron (English, 1750–1823). Map of America, 1804. Soho noted as the address. Engraved map, hand-colored, with uncolored pictorial cartouche. Backed with linen and sectioned (24) for folding. Framed: 63" x 52 1/2". First Issue. Large and significant map of North and South American with the Pacific Ocean extending beyond the Sandwich Islands, and the Atlantic encompassing the Cape Verde Islands and points to the east. This is the first issue of the map, with the publisher's address at No. 24 Rathbone Place. The map was published one year after the Louisiana Purchase, on the eve of a decade of heightened activity in the American west. in the next ten years the map was to be largely filled in by Lewis & Clark, Pike, Long, and others. The map does include information provided by the various voyages to the Northwest Coast of America by Captain James Cook, as well as Vancouver, Mears, La Perouse and others, and the overland excursions of Alexander Mackenzie. de Hennepin, Louis de. A Map of a New World between New-Mexico and the Frozen Sea. Newly discovered by Father Lewis Hennepin, Missionary Recollect and Native of Aht in Hainault. London: Printed for M. Bentley, J. Tonson, etc, 1698. Hand colored copperplate engraved map, hand colored cartouche. Framed: 26 1/4" x 20". An uncommon English edition of Hennepin's map of North America is most notable for its depiction of the river and lake routes into the interior and the Great Lakes region. Particularly, the delineation of Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron are a marked improvement on Sanson's open-ended versions. Even with these improvements, the lack of accuracy is very evident; the lakes are enlarged and exaggerated, Hudson Bay is too far to the east and the Mississippi River too far to the west with its mouth in what is present-day Texas. Inset depicts the Pacific Northwest, with the Land of Iesso and Japon noted very near Asia. California is not shown as an island in this example. Condition: Sight good.

Tipped onto backing board. Trimmed close to top edge margin lacking page numbers and part of Artico. A few foxing spots. Sheet measures: 12 1/2" x 12". Frame size: 19 1/2" x 19 1/2".

Hondius, Jodocus. Virginiae Item et Floridae Americae Provinciarum, nova Descriptio. Amsterdam / 1634 circa. Handcolored copperplate engraved map. Two handcolored cartouches and two insets of Floridian and Virginian cities. Frame size: 27 3/4" x 22 3/4". Sight: 19 1/4" x 14". Burden notes it is "a composite largely of John White's Virginia and Jacques le Moyne's Florida as interpreted by Thedore de Bry in 1590 and 1591 respectively. Chesepioock Sinus representing Chesapeake Bay is still shown in its White delineation. At the end of this years, 1606, a party of Englishmen left England to begin arguably the most important colonization of North America in this very bay, at Jamestown. Within just a few years the entire region would be complete revised cartographically. The map is embellished with various game including a wild turkey. Condition: Sight good.

Vincenzo Maria Coronelli. Eastern portion of North America. Copperplate engraved globe gore. From Corso Geographico Universale. Venice: Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, ca 1696-1697. This gore portion shows the eastern portion of the America, from edge of Virginia, and New Jersey, all the way extending to Canada and the Western portion of Greenland. This gore still retains the original name places of New Sweden and New Holland (label on Cape Cod) that by this time no longer existed in Colonial America, with Boston named as Briston. With vignette engravings of fishing canoes, seals, early whaling and one of the indigenous people in Greenland. Some pencil notations to margins. Measures 10 3/4" x 16 3/4".

Frame size: 18 1/2" x 16 1/2". Depicting California as an island on the second Sanson model, showing two bays on the north end of the island. The island is also very narrow in the center, almost becoming two islands, a theory proposed by Father Luis Velarde. WIth a large title cartouche, surrounded by Native Americans and birds. McLaughlin 221; Tooley (America) 95. Condition: Sight very good to near fine. A few faint spots.

Chart of Hudson's Bay and the surrounding region, including Laborador, Newfoundland, James Island, Greenland, etc. There is a pictorial cartouche at upper left feature fur-clothed Indian shooting a polar bear and her cubs with a bow and arrow; at lower left is a scale of miles surrounded by Indians and French traders. This is the second state with the "met Priviligie voor/ 15 Iaar" added to the cartouche and the error Teppa Nova in Newfoundland. Kershaw 206; Burden 515/state 2. Condition: Faint spotting.

Frame size: 16" x 14 3/4" . Bowen's map shows an unknown NW Coast of America, predating Cook's explorations and New Albion in Northern California,. Each of the colonies is named, as is New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Savannah, Charles Town, James Town etc. New Orleans is shown, as is "Cenis" (Texas). In the west, Santa Fe is named, as is Port Sr. Francis Drake, Quivira, New Albion, Rio Colorado, Panis, Apaches, Navari, and the Carmel River. Condition: Sight: very good.Two faint creases, minor offsetting from typeset of verso.

The map identifies a number of important early sources, including Martini, Tavernier, Giovanni Grueber and Benedetto Goes. Macao is shown, but pre-dating Hong Kong, the Dutch settlement of New Zealand is shown in Taiwan, the Great Wall of China is depicted with an early example of Japan with Hokkaido connected to Tartary and labelled Tartari di Yupi. Original French Edition of James Cook's Chart of New Zealand, from the First French Edition of Hawkesworth's Voyages. Map of New Zealand, engraved by Bernard. Framed: 23 1/2 x 27 1/2". The most important single map in New Zealand's history and the first complete map of the two islands' coastlines. It confirmed that New Zealand was not part of a mysterious southern continent and records some of the earliest interactions between Europeans and Maoris. The chart was made during Cook's first voyage and shows the track of the Endeavour with dates and soundings. The interior reflects the mountainous topography. Capt. James Cook sailed from England in 1768 on his ship the Endeavour on his first round-the-world voyage visiting islands in the Pacific before sighting New Zealand's north & south islands and the strait that divides them, which he named Cook's Strait. Between 1769-1770 Cook sailed around both islands, proving that they were independent of the Great Southern Continent, which was what navigators had believed since Abel Tasman discovered the land mass in 1642. This finely engraved map was taken from a sketch brought back to London by Cook in 1771, which was published in English in London by Cadell & Strahan in 1773, and in French in Paris in 1774.

Ramusio, Giovanni. Giacomo Gastaldi. La Nouva Francia. From Terzo Volume delle Navigationi et Viaggi, 1565. Woodcut map. State 2 in Burden 25. Frame size: 22 1/2" x 18 1/2". This unusual map is the first to focus on the area of New England and New France and the first to use the name Nuova Francia. Derived from the Gastaldi's 1548 regional map, the cartography is based largely on Verrazzano and Cartier's reports resulting in a curious depiction of the Hudson and St. Lawrence rivers. Newfoundland is identified as Terra Nuova, below the large Isola de Demoni, appropriately decorated with demons. The area near New York Harbor is titled Angoulesme. Long Island, which Verrazzano imagined as a peninsula, is labeled Flora. Newport Bay is called Port Real and Narragansett Bay is Port du Refuge. A long, snake-like band, speculated to be an early representation of the Gulf Stream, marks the rich fishing banks. The map is populated with scenes of Native Americans hunting and fishing, elaborately engraved ships, and fanciful sea monsters. Jean Denis Barbie du Bocage. Carte du Palus Meotide et du Pont Euxin...Paris, 1791. Copperplate engraved map. Frame size: 14 3/4" x 17 1/2". This copper engraved map focuses on the Black Sea and illustrates the travels of Anacharsis, a Scythian philosopher who traveled from his homeland on the northern shores of the Black Sea to Athens in the early 6th century BC. The map is based on the cartography of D'Anville. Condition: Sight very good. A few foxing spots. Under glass, not examined out of frame.

Claudio Cestria/Gloucester, c1649. Copperplate engraved and handcolored map, gilt heightened. An early example of the town of Gloucester that follows John Speed example 1610, with slight additions and larger views, with the walls of city present prior to their destruction issued by Charles II in 1662. The Botanical Magazine is "the oldest current scientific periodical of its kind with coloured illustrations in the world... in the beauty of production and high standard of its contributions it can claim a unique place" (Patrick Synge. Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society (1948), p.73). The Curtis is "a delightful work pictorially, never excelled as a periodical, most carefully coloured and a source of lasting interest and information." (Dunthrone, p.190). Though the title-pages date from 1793-1804, the plates are dated from March 1786. Frame size: 22 1/2" x 26 1/2" This exceptional originally hand-colored engraving is from Alexander Wilson’s American Ornithology or The Natural History of the Birds of the United States. This is the second edition published in 1829. This edition is often preferred to the first because of the superior paper quality. The same copper plates were used in publication so the subjects are identical to the first. Alexander Wilson is known as the “Father of American Ornithology.” Wilson’s work, American Ornithology, was the first focused on only American birds. Wilson drew most of the birds for the work himself and employed Alexander Lawson and John G. Warnicke for the engraving. Condition: Sight good.

Edwards was a frequent contributor; he would eventually go on to start a rival publication, The Botanical Register, in 1815. The earliest engraving in the lot (1786) predates the magazine by a year, but was likewise published by Curtis. The date range for the magazine plates is 1790-1822; most around 1800.
