Decorations may be awarded for valor in combat, such as a Distinguished Service Medal; others to recognize service in a particular theater of war or campaign, such as Afghanistan. There are shoulder sleeve insignia, distinctive unit insignia, unit crests, and other indicia for dress uniforms as well as combat uniforms. They can indicate rank, specialty, commendations, qualifications, or the unit a service member belongs to.
