Description
What fascinating history Torowie has: Most people think that when WW2 General Macarthur is reported to have said "I will return", he was in the Phillipines. Nah! He escaped from the Phillipines by air and during an equitorial storm. When he and his wife got to Darwin, she refused to fly again. So, they caught the train, but the train only ran about 100 km south of Darwin then they had to go by dirt road to Alicee Springs where the train started again. They were heading for Brisbane. Flying from Darwin to Brisbane would have been "easy". Instead, the train from Alice Springs went to Port Augusta on 3'6" gauge. The 5'3" to Adelaide and then to Melbourne then to Albury then 4'8.5" to Sydney then 4'8.5" to Brisbane. All this to say that there was a US camp at Terowie and while the train was serviced, Macarthur spoke his famous words on the platform, being "I came through and I shall return" Lot 1 is a staff from Terowie. It may well have been in the Electric Staff Instrument mere feet from those historic words. T1 2BR
