1938 Rudge Special.
Rudge motorcycles were produced from 1911 to 1946. The firm was known for its innovations in engine and transmission design, and its racing successes. Their sales motto was "Rudge it, do not trudge it."
Rarely seen and offered for genuine sale this example appears very original.
Great opportunity to own this vintage high performance rare bike.
This 1938 Rudge is a shed find that is unrestored. The 1938 Models are considered superior to the earlier models due to the more advanced rocker cover design and right hand gearshift.
The Rudge 500 design dated from TT winning models in the 1920’s. Rudge was a famous exponent of 4 valves per cylinder. The Rudge Special had a cast iron 4- valve head which distinguished it from the more expensive “Ulster” models that had a bronze 4- valve head head. Other than that both models were virtually the same.
Other well documented Rudge features were the large diameter brakes which were interlinked by a special spring link which varied the force between front and rear brakes.
The other major feature of these models is the hand operated centre stand. This is operated while sitting on the bike and this is much safer and easier than most other bikes with the exception of the D series Vincent which used the same idea.
Rudges were a powerful and fast 500 in the day. Much more sophisticated and expensive than most of their competition. Most of these barn finds have been located and restored by now. This is one of those bikes that can justify the restoration cost.
This motorcycle is located in our facility in Melbourne, for further information please contact Dave Hosking 0474 182 002 or Mason Hibbert 0455 191 035.
To protect your investment motorcycle bidders should consider at a minimum replacement of fuel, oil, fluids, filters and thorough brake inspection as motorcycles may have been stationary for some time. Motorcycles are sold as is off the floor – unregistered. Please check photos carefully for motorcycle condition. No warranty expressed or implied, sold with all or any faults, and where applicable sold with Australian Government Import Approval.
