Dutch bucket layouts are unique in the fact that water is pumped through individual large buckets, as opposed to a hydro table or deep-water culture reservoir. Each bucket has a siphon to allow water to flow back into a water and nutrient reservoir to recirculate. The common planting mediums used in Dutch buckets include perlite, coir, or expanded clay pebbles.
