History of Tom's Snacks
Tom's Snacks has a rich history rooted in American snacking culture. Founded in 1925 by Tom Huston, an entrepreneur in Columbus, Georgia, Tom’s began with a unique peanut shelling machine and a method for packaging roasted peanuts in airtight bags to preserve freshness. Huston’s innovations quickly established Tom's as a recognizable name, especially in gas stations and convenience stores throughout the southeastern United States. Known initially for its roasted peanuts, Tom's expanded over the years to include a variety of snacks, such as potato chips, cheese crackers, and corn chips, catering to the growing demand for convenient, on-the-go treats.
In 1966, General Mills acquired Tom’s, which enabled wider distribution and marketing efforts, pushing the brand into a national spotlight. Ownership changed several times over the decades. In 1983, Rowntree Mackintosh, a U.K.-based confectionery company, purchased Tom's Snacks. A decade later, in 1993, Heico Acquisitions took ownership before selling to Lance, Inc., a large snack producer in North Carolina. The brand later became part of Snyder’s-Lance when Lance merged with Snyder’s of Hanover in 2010, bringing Tom's into a broader distribution network and enhancing its visibility. Despite these changes, Tom’s remained a beloved brand, particularly in the South, with classic products that resonate with a sense of nostalgia and tradition.
Today, as part of Campbell Soup Company’s portfolio following its acquisition of Snyder’s-Lance in 2018, Tom’s Snacks continues to offer its traditional line of roasted peanuts, cheese crackers, pork rinds, and potato chips. Known for its distinctive red and white packaging and enduring appeal, Tom’s has secured a lasting place in American snack history, representing the simplicity and satisfaction of traditional snack foods that have been enjoyed by generations. With nearly a century of heritage, Tom’s Snacks maintains a loyal customer base while adapting to shifts in the snack food industry.
