Description
Native American Artifacts from the collection of Ted Smith. This collection of artifacts is a representation of the Woodland (Hopewell) culture which was very dominate at the confluence of the Lamine and Missouri Rivers in Cooper County Missouri. Ted was raised and spent his life on the family farm in this area just 1 1/2 miles from the Mellor Village and Mounds Archaeological District, also known as Site 23CP1. This is a historic archaeological site and national historic district located on a terrace in the Lamine River locality of the Missouri River Valley. The site is the second largest Woodland (Hopewell) village site in Missouri. At least 20 large earthen burial mounds overlook the settlement from the north-facing Missouri River escarpment. Ted enjoyed collecting artifacts from the surrounding farms his entire life. He was also an active member of the Missouri Archaeology Society and a student of local history. He presented to schools and society groups for years on the topics of Native Americans, Fur Trade and The Santa Fe Trail in the Boonslick area. It is our pleasure to be working with the Smith family in presenting another fine collection of artifacts from this culturally rich area. This will be an online only auction; however, if you are uncomfortable with the online platform we are happy to set up absentee bids for you.
