3 ninth plate tintypes in Union cases identified as Captain Hudson Sawyer, 1st Maine Heavy Artillery (in patriotic case), an unidentified soldier whose case contains a ledger detailing his war travels to and from Knoxville, Flat Creek, Strawberry Plains, Bean's Station and more, many with dates, and Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth (April 11, 1837 - May 24, 1861), a Union Army officer and law clerk who was the first conspicuous casualty and the first Union officer to die in the American Civil War, a ninth plate ambrotype in full case identified as William P James, (West Chester Co [?]), NY, (remainder illegible on case interior), a sixteenth plate tintype of Major General John Ellis Wool, and an oval-framed ninth plate tintype identified as Frank Bardwell of Mass, likely Francis G. Bardwell, enlisted on 9/15/1862 at Whately, MA as a private, he mustered into "I" Co. MA 52nd Infantry on 10/11/1862, he was mustered out on 8/14/1863 at Camp Miller, Greenfield, MA, together with a gem-size tintype image of General Ulysses S. Grant, condition issues include darkening, light scratches, spotting, some oxidation, case wear, one Union case (unidentified soldier) with crack and chips, one case (Wool) missing glass, please refer to photos.
PROVENANCE: Early photography collection of Kenneth Rodgers, 92 years young. Formerly of Sullivan County, NY. The collection spans over 45 years and was acquired from shows, antique malls, shops, outdoor markets and private collectors throughout the East Coast and parts of the Midwest.
