Denny C Miller performed his duties as a Rifle Platoon Leader in s most outstanding nanner. I consider Lt Miller not just an effective combat leader but more of an outstanding combat leader. He thinks and acts quickly and independently and needs only a minimum of instruction and supervision to accomplish his assigned mission. He is strong in the qualities of interest and enthusiasm and this goes a long way in helping in leading by example. Lt Miller has qualified himself as an outstanding leader by actively practicing good strong leadership principles. He led his men by example and as a result got the most out of his subordinates. He took full responsibility for the things his platoon did and when something went wrong he accepted full personal blame. He never asked subordinates to do anything that he was unable or unwilling to do himself. He was firm but fair with his subordinates. He shoved a genuine concern for their needs and did all he could to with patience and respect and he backed them to the hilt. But on the other hand, he did not pamper them. Lt Miller practiced these aforementioned principles with diligence and persistence that won him the total respect and admiration of his subordinates, contemporaries and superiors. His men were totally confident in his ability to lead them. This confidence enabled Lt Miller and his platoon to enjoy success when in actual enemy contact. When in contact with regular NVA forces, Lt Miller was able to lead his platoon very effectively. I personally observed Lt Miller twice while he and his platoon were in contact with the enemy. Both times he performed in an outstanding manner. He kept calm, he acted quickly and he always made the correct tactical decision. He fought his platoon effect- ively. Lt Miller has demonstrated his outstanding ability as a combat leader by consistently accomplishing his assigned missions in an outstanding manner. He is the finest platoon leader I have ever observed and he is capable of out- standing performance in any capacity. I feel Lt Miller should attend Infantry Officers Career course at the earliest possible date. He should be promoted ahead of his contemporaries due to his outstanding performance of duty. JAMES B STAPLETON JR Cpt, Infantry Commanding. Also Several Citations for his Foreign Awards and the medals as well to include Vietnam Gallantry Crosses Vietnam Staff Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. All are excellent. Vietnam WarThe 4th Infantry Division deployed from Fort Lewis to Camp Enari, Pleiku, Vietnam on 25 September 1966 (The 2nd Brigade actually deployed on 21 July and arrived in Vietnam on August 2nd aboard the Nelson M Walker and was flown to Pleiku) and served more than four years, returning to Fort Carson, Colorado on 8 December 1970. Two brigades operated in the Central Highlands/II Corps Zone, but its 3rd Brigade, including the division's armor battalion, was sent to Tây Ninh Province northwest of Saigon to take part in Operation Attleboro (September to November 1966), and later Operation Junction City (February to May 1967), both in War Zone C. After nearly a year of combat, the 3rd Brigade's battalions officially became part of the 25th Infantry Division in exchange for the battalions of the 25th's 3rd Brigade, then in Qu?ng Ngãi Province as part of the division-sized Task Force Oregon. The division experienced intense combat against People's Army of Vietnam regular forces in the mountains surrounding Kontum in the autumn of 1967. The division's 3rd Brigade was withdrawn from Vietnam in April 1970 and inactivated at Fort Lewis. In May the remainder of the division conducted cross-border operations during the Cambodian Incursion. The division then moved to An Khe. The "Ivy Division" returned from Vietnam on 7 December 1970, and was rejoined in Fort Carson by its former 3rd Brigade from Hawaii, where it had re-deployed as part of the withdrawal of the 25th Infantry Division. One battalion remained in Vietnam as a separate organization until January 1972.
