Description |
Uniform grouping of a Brigadier General of the 11th Armored Division to include 1) Tank Helmet by Murdock Model 1AT2 Its very similar to the M1938 Tankers Helmet but way more attractive. The colors are a bit different giving it a more of a contrast and giving it a more pleasing look. There is no size markings but its roughly a size 7 1/14. To the front of the body is a period Armored Decal. The tanker helmet was often referred to as a crash helmet, since it provided no protection against projectiles and only protected the head against sharp objects in the tank. Prior to 1938 the Infantry and the Cavalry both had their own designs for tank helmets. It was decided that the use of two helmets added unnecessary costs to the supply chain. The Ordinance Board began testing several commercial varieties along with the two military models and decided that the Cavalry design had the needed properties. The Rawlings Manufacturing Company, who manufactured football helmets, came up with a design that was patented on May 1, 1941. 2) 11th Armored Division Tanker Officer Khaki Cut Down Ike Jacket. The uniform has single five pointed Star to each shoulder and a 11th Armored Division and a 4th Army Corps Patch and all other insignia has been removed. There is no size or manufactures labels to the interior but is roughly a size 36R. 3) Khaki Dress Shirt 4) Khaki Riding Breeches roughly size 32 Waist. 4) High Quarter Leather Riding Boots. Roughly a size 10. All items are in very good to excellent. Combat chronicle: The division was activated on 15 August 1942. It arrived in England 11 October 1944 and prepared for combat with two months' training in the Salisbury Plain Training Area. The division landed in Normandy on 16 December 1944, assigned to contain the enemy in the Lorient Pocket, but the onset of the Battle of the Bulge resulted in a forced march to the Meuse and the defense of a 30-mile sector from Givet to Sedan, 23 December. Launching an attack from Neufchâteau, Belgium, 30 December, the 11th defended the highway to Bastogne against fierce assault. An eyewitness account by John Fague of B Company, 21st Armored Infantry Battalion of the 11th Armored Division, describes the killing of 80 German prisoners by American soldiers at the Chenogne massacre "Machine guns were being set up. These boys were to be machine gunned and murdered. We were committing the same crimes we were now accusing the Japanese and Germans of doing". The division acted as spearhead of a wedge into the enemy line, and its junction with the First Army at Houffalize, Belgium, 16 January 1945, created a huge trap. After the liquidation of the Bulge, the Siegfried Line was pierced, Lützkampen falling 7 February, Grosskampenberg on the 17th, and the key point, Roscheid, 20 February. After a brief rest, the division crossed the Prum and Kyll Rivers, taking Gerolstein and Nieder Bettingen against violent opposition. Andernach and Brohl fell 9 March, in the sweep to the Rhine. In the swing southward to clear the Saar-Moselle-Rhine pocket, the Moselle River was crossed at Bullay and the Worms Airport captured, 21 March. After rest and maintenance, the division drove across the Rhine at Oppenheim, took Hanau and Fulda, and headed for the Thuringian Forest, reaching Oberhof, 3 April. The offensive raced through Bavaria, Coburg falling on the 10th, Bayreuth on the 14th. In the final drive, the division crossed the Regen river, 24 April, overran Grafenau and Freyung, and plunged toward the Danube, seizing Rohrbach, Neufelden, and Zwettl. The enemy put up its last significant resistance along the approaches to Linz, Austria, but the 11th entered that city, 5 May. Pushing onward, elements contacted Soviet forces, 8 May, the first unit of the Third Army, to meet the Soviet Red Army. On 5 May 1945, elements of the US 11th Armored Division liberated the Mauthausen concentration camp. The war in Europe officially ended 9 May, and the division was placed on occupational duty until it was disbanded on 31 August 1945. Tank and Ordnance Memorial Museum. The AAF Tank Museum was a living memorial dedicated to the Tank and Cavalry soldiers of the world. Before 1981 some of the artifacts that make up the AAF Tank Museum was a private collection belonging to Mr. William Gasser. Mr. Gasser felt that his collection would be beneficial in educating present and future generations to the sacrifices made and the technologies gained during war. Therefore, in 1981 the AAF Tank Museum was established as a non-profit charitable organization, and Mr. Gasser donated his private collection to the Tank Museum. Mr. Gasser is still active as Volunteer Director and Curator of the Tank Museum and his knowledge of military history has been a great asset to the museum. Unfortunately after 20 years of operation it had to close its doors, which is when this uniform was acquired.

CONDITION OF ITEMS Milestone Auctions makes every effort to accurately describe all items offered in its sales, however all items for sale are 'as is,' and it is the bidder's responsibility (present or absentee bidders) to determine the exact condition of each item. Milestone Auctions will not be held responsible for typographical errors. Neither we nor the consignor make any guarantees, warranties, or representation expressed, or implied, in regard to the property or the correctness of the catalog or other description of the authenticity of authorship, physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, provenance, exhibition, literature or historic relevance of the property or otherwise. No statement anywhere whether oral or written, shall be deemed such a guarantee, warranty or representation. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether or not it has been restored. All firearms transfers will be in strict accordance with all International, Federal, State and local laws. Be sure to check your country, state and local laws before bidding. If you are unable to import, purchase or own a firearm according to your residency laws, do not bid on these items. If you bid and find out later you cannot legally own/accept delivery, the bid is still a valid contract that the buyer must pay.? Modern Firearms (post 1898) will be noted with a asterisk (*) at the end of the description.? Checkout and pickup at our location:o The same person to whom the bidder number is registered must be the person to pick up the firearm(s) at the conclusion of the sale ? Any firearms shipped are legally required to be shipped to an ATF licensed FFL dealer within your state of residence for transfer and pickup. BIDDING RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES The auctioneer will determine the highest bidder. The auctioneer alone has the right to reopen the bidding of an item if deemed necessary due to a dispute. If there is a tie bid between the floor and Internet or absentee bid, the floor bid takes precedence. Milestone Auctions and its representatives reserve the right to remove those attendees who impede preview and/or the auction. Title to all merchandise shall pass to the highest bidder at the fall of the auctioneer's hammer. The buyer will then assume all risk and full responsibility of the lot purchased once ownership has changed. -ABSENTEE BIDDING - Milestone Auctions will accept absentee bids if pre-authorized by mail, fax or through our website online. Absentee bidders must use the absentee bid form and clearly mark the lot number, title and maximum bid amount. Absentee bidding forms may be accessed online at our website. If there are two (2) identical bids placed on the same item, priority will be given to the first bid received. All bids must be left in increments as explained on our bid form. If a bid is 'out of increment,' the auctioneer has the right to round the bid up to the next correct increment. Bidders may preview, register and place bids online through our website. Online absentee bidding through Milestone Auctions is available until 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the sale. Absentee bids placed through our website will be auto charged to the credit card entered 48 hours after the end of the sale. If you wish to pay by another method please contact us within 48 hours after the sale. Seller(s) agree to allow the Auctioneer to accept and execute absentee bids in a competitive manner for potential buyers and under the Milestone Auctions absentee bidding terms and conditions.
