Military medals, badges, insignia, ribbons, and patches mean many things in armed forces around the world. Decorations may be awarded for valor in combat, such as a Distinguished Service Medal; others to recognize service in a particular theater of war or campaign, such as Afghanistan. There are shoulder sleeve insignia, distinctive unit insignia, unit crests, and other indicia for dress uniforms as well as combat uniforms. They can indicate rank, specialty, commendations, qualifications, or the unit a service member belongs to. Among the military medals you're likely to find in this category are the Purple Heart, Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, the British Victoria Cross, the German Iron Cross and Blue Max, and the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun. Pins with clutch pin backs (pinbacks) include lapel pins and hat pins. Examples include the Oak Leaf of a major; the Marines' Eagle, Globe, and Anchor, and a Special Forces crest. Famous patches recognizable at a glance are the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagle,” the 2nd Armored Division “Hell On Wheels,” the 1st Infantry Division “Big Red One,” and the US Army 1st Cavalry. Many are vintage collector's items from conflicts such as World War II, Vietnam, World War I, and Korea. Others are more recent from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
